What are Big Benches, the giant benches?

These are truly irresistible attractions to an already attractive landscape, where anyone would love to spend a nice picnic or take a relaxing walk. The first Big Bench were made in 2010 by American designer Chris Bangle. The idea of making benches so large to the point that you feel as small as children on them has caught on. Thus the Big Bench Community Project was initiated.

Big Benches are the ideal supports for enjoying the beauty of the Langhe landscape while rediscovering some of the serenity experienced as a child when looking at the world around you.

The large benches are real treasures distributed throughout the Piedmont region placed off the usual tourist routes, thus making their search a real treasure hunt.

Where to find giant benches in the Langhe?

The Big Benches of the Langhe can be found in these locations:

• Monforte d’Alba: one is inside the village and one is in Cascina Castelletto.
• Dogliani: blue and red, located near Dogliani Castle.
• Farigliano: giant lilac bench placed among the vineyards outside the town.
• Clavesana: there are three benches here: the red one, which is the “official” one and started the Big Bench project; the blue one, in Frazione Lo Sbaranzo; and the yellow one, in Borgata Palazzetto.
• Carrù: The large gold Big Bench and smaller benches are located in the main town square.
• Piozzo: an orange one, located next to the Albarosa chapel.
• Monchiero: a white one, located in the upper part of the village.
• Vezza d’Alba: a gray, hidden among the vineyards.
• Sunrise: turquoise, located at Scaparone.
• Canale: a rose, located at the Giaconi Hill of Madonna dei Cavalli in Canale.
• Neive: a green one is located beyond Borgata Gavello, in the direction of Tre Stelle.
• Coazzolo: lavender-colored, near the cemetery.
• Santo Stefano Belbo: yellow, to find it follow the signs for Agriturismo ai Piacentini.
• Arguello: acid green in color, within walking distance of the village.
• Niella Belbo: light blue, located on the Esplanade of Love.
• Paroldo: orange, located at Pedaggera.
• Cigliè: red and silver, along the road up to the village.
• Ceva: yellow and black, located near the Campanone.
• La Morra: a red giant bench not belonging to the Big Bench circuit.

In Alba, unfortunately, there are no giant benches, perhaps because the intent of their creator was to be used to attract attention to hidden hamlets and help rediscover them.

The giant benches don’t stop!

The popup of giant benches doesn’t stop. Very recently, Big Bench No. 191, colored yellow and green to commemorate Moscato D’Asti, made its appearance in Castiglione Tinella. The bench is located within a clean and secluded area that definitely entices people to come and look for it. An element of sure tourist attraction that will make the area even more irresistible to visitors!

If you happen to be in the Langhe so you will find quite a number of majestic colored benches (and new ones are added from time to time, so it is not easy to give an exact number).
